Rest(ed): A Boston College Pavilion

Spring 2023

For our final project in my 3D sculpture design class, we were prompted to create a pavilion for Boston College’s campus. Designed to be a space for all people to enjoy, I named my pavilion “Rest(ed)” for both those who were searching for a place to rest and reenergize and also those who were already rested and wanted a space to enjoy with friends. The 3D design of the pavilion was created using Rhino 7 and the renderings were drawn using Adobe Illustrator.

This is the existing site on campus that I chose to build my pavilion. It is a lawn that is located between four classroom buildings. Instead of the main lawns on campus, I decided on this space because it is a more secluded area that students do not often use but also has high foot traffic due to its central location between the buildings.

We began with an object of our choosing and were told to draw inspiration from it. I chose a two level side table and used the bird’s eye view of the object. Below is a process drawing that shows the steps that I took to create the final pavilion design.

Existing Parts

The last rendering in the gallery above is an interior perspective. We are looking through a portion of the pavilion and to an existing tree on the site. Behind us is the Statue of St. Ignatius which is additionally an existing piece on this site. My design is meant to add to the space and rather than taking down the tree or moving the statue, I felt it necessary to keep both and include them in my design. The entire design of my pavilion encircles and points towards the tree. If a student were to sit at the bench that is in front of the statue and face the direction that he faces, they would be able to look through the arch and see the tree. This is the experience I hoped to convey through my last rendering in the slide.
